Dear Families,
We hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend.
Last week at Calvin Park/LCVI we had workshops to help us move forward in making our school more inclusive for all. On Wednesday, Calvin participated in a virtual assembly workshop focusing on allyship, kindness, and school culture. On Thursday, LCVI held a virtual assembly workshop on bystander intervention and allyship, which gave students and staff concrete tools to intervene safely when we witness harassment anywhere in the school community. Both workshops encouraged students with practical strategies for making a positive impact on one another.
This past Wednesday we celebrated Ms. Christine LeClair, Ms. Tyla Jakobsen, and Ms. Hayley Brown for Administrative Professionals Day. We are thankful for everything they do to keep things running smoothly, and for the many ways they support students, staff, and the school community!
Congratulations to our Coding Teams on winning gold and silver in BOTH Grade 7 and Grade 8 divisions at the Bayridge Secondary School Computer Coding Competition on April 28. Way to go, Comets!
Administration Update: We are happy for vice-principal Ms. Wilma Pettingill who recently announced her upcoming retirement at the end this school year. Ms. Pettingill will be greatly missed by students, staff, and the whole Calvin Park/LCVI school community. We congratulate Ms. Pettingill on her amazing 31-year career in education! Ms. Carrie Propper, currently vice-principal at Harrowsmith Public School, will be joining our Administration Team in September. We look forward to welcoming Ms. Propper to our awesome Calvin/LCVI school community.
The “School Day” Program is coming to Calvin Park! This is an activities management and payment processing accounting application program, which allows for online payment for field trips, hot lunches, etc. More information on how to set-up an account will be sent home with students this week.
The Eco-Schools Club is promoting “Waste-Free Lunches” on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. A waste-free lunch may include reusable food and drink containers, reusable cutlery, and cloth napkins. Students and teachers would avoid using prepackaged foods, single-use plastic baggies, juice boxes, paper napkins, aluminum foil, and single-use utensils. When you go waste-free, you are helping to reduce the environmental impacts caused from the unnecessary transportation, production, and disposal of packaging products and you are contributing to helping the environment.
This week (May 2-6) is Mental Health Awareness Week. There will be daily announcements promoting mental health and self-care.
The Social Justice Anti-Poverty group is collecting items for Kingston's homeless population up to Friday, May 13th. They are looking for dontations of new toiletries, such as toothbrushes, soap, deodorant, shampoo, hygiene products, etc. and will count and sort them before donating to the Integrated Living Hub. The class that donates the most items wins a sundae party. The Social Justice Club thanks everyone for the many generous donations already received!
This week, Grade 7 students in our School to Community program will be flexing their entrepreneurial and financial literacy skills by making Mother’s Day donuts to sell on Friday during second break. They will be selling four mini donuts for $1.00 or two medium donuts for $1.00.
The Yearbook Club has been working hard to put together a terrific memory book that captures many amazing moments this year. The order deadline is quickly approaching. More information about how to purchase a yearbook can be found here: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1CmAKOM-CzkzgN484qh-SMa2Eae6XP0a3vQA_X1KHB-g/mobilepresent?slide=id.p
