Calvin Park Comet Communication

May 10, 2026

Wishing all Calvin Park moms, grandmothers, caregivers, and mentors a lovely Mother's Day! Thank you for all that you do.

Happy Mother's Day

Dear Families,

May is here at Calvin Park Public School, and with it comes the busy, energizing stretch that carries us toward the end of the school year. Our days are filled with more learning and activity outdoors, year-end planning, and many opportunities for students to get involved and showcase their growth. As we head into the final weeks, thank you for your continued support at home and in our school community.

We welcome twelve Queen's University teacher candidates joining us for the spring practicum this month.

Congratulations to our runners who participated in the Bayridge Road Race on April 28 and the 45th Annual LCVI Road Race this past Wednesday. Way to go, Comets!

CORE 8 students were fantastic leaders and role models as they supported younger students at the Polson Park Track and Field meet on Friday, May 1st.  Way to represent yourselves and our school in such a wonderful manner.

Thanks for an awesome Track and Field Day, Calvin! Our Comet Spirit was shining bright with strong efforts in the various events, great support for each other, and courage to try new things! Shout out to the Calvin Park staff and teacher candidates who helped make this day a success, and to Mr. Wartman for keeping us well fueled at the BBQ.

Calvin's Closet

Thank you for your donations to Calvin's Closet, our school‑based thrift and clothing‑swap initiative designed to support our students, strengthen community connections, and promote sustainability.

Items Needed: Summer clothing and boys/men sizes athletic pants/shorts.

Students should bring any donations to The Hub. At Calvin Park, our greatest strength has always been our tight‑knit community and the way we lift each other up. Thank you for your generosity, kindness, and ongoing support as we launch this initiative. Go Comets!

Family Engagement and Climate Survey

The Limestone District School Board’s (LDSB) Family Engagement and Climate Survey is live and we invite families to share their experiences with their student’s school and with the school board. Your feedback helps Limestone understand what is working well and where we can improve to continue to support welcoming, safe, and supportive school communities. The survey is open until May 11 and is available online. Paper copies are also available at your school’s administrative office.

Access the Family Engagement and Climate Survey online.

Participation is voluntary and anonymous. You may skip any questions you choose, and no identifying information is collected.

Thank you for sharing your voice and helping strengthen Limestone schools and school communities.

Athletics & Clubs

Track and field results will be posted on Monday. Meeting on Wednesday at first break for all athletes going to Regionals at Invista. Student wishing to do the 2000m should be prepared to run on Tuesday at morning break.

Friday Skateboard Club!  Students who signed up for Fridays can meet Mr. Alldred in the gym at 9:55.

Eco Club Update

Thank you to the Eco Club for organizing several Earth Week activities at Calvin Park, including Earth Hour, Earth Day Games, and "Pitch-In Kingston" community cleanup. In addition, Eco Club students attend the Youth Climate Action Summit YCAS Basecamp.

Our Habitat Garden was launched three years ago and had its first planting last spring and fall. Our master gardener recommended that we move the taller plants to separate planters to make room for a new planting this spring and fall. We have designed two portable planters with the help of Mr. Wartman and plan to use cedar lumber so that no chemicals leach into the plant beds.

Scent Free Space

Scents at school - Calvin Park/LCVI is a scent free school. We have students and staff who experience severe physical reactions when exposed to artificially made scents. The most severe reactions stem from colognes, perfumes, and body sprays. Please do not wear scents at Calvin Park/LCVI, do not apply them before you come to school, and do not apply them while at school. Thank you for your help with this.

Traffic Reminders for Drop-Off/Pick-Up

The front of our school is very busy in the morning and at dismissal. Please take care when entering and exiting the front laneway. A reminder that the front lane way is for quick drop-off and pick-up. Cars are not permitted to be parked or idling in this area. At the end of the school day, if your student is not ready to be picked-up, you must move along to maintain traffic flow.

Consider picking up your student 5-10 minutes after dismissal to help reduce congestion. Or consider dropping off/picking up your student at pre-arranged meeting spot in the surrounding neighbourhood. Thank you for your help keeping everyone safe.

School Advisory Council Update

Our last School Advisory Council meeting of the year is Monday, May 25 from 6:00 - 7:30 pm in the Library. All are welcome!

Save the Date: Calvin Park/LCVI Staff Appreciation is Wednesday, June 3. We would like to provide the Calvin Park and LCVI staff with breakfast treats/snacks and a pizza lunch as a gesture of our thanks for all the wonderful work they do throughout the year. If you would like to help, you can bring a breakfast or snack item for staff to enjoy. Cards and notes of gratitude are also very welcome. Please share your appreciation in any of the following ways: Send a card or note of thanks to the Calvin Park and/or LCVI staff. Send cut garden flowers or a plant. Contribute a shareable food item for the staff appreciation morning. Suggestions include: Fruit bowl or Fruit / Vegetable tray; Baked goods (e.g., muffins, pastries, coffee cake, donuts); Celebration foods like cake, cupcakes, brownies; Keurig coffee pods; Paper plates, napkins, cutlery; “Thank You” decorations.

Every School Day Counts

Mental Health Supports & Resources

In response to tragic events, locally or globally, students may experience a wide range of emotions, including sadness, confusion, worry, or questions about what they may be hearing from others. Students may react in different ways depending on their age, experiences, and how connected they feel to the situation. With time, reassurance, and support from caring adults, these reactions often ease.

We encourage families to keep lines of communication open at home, to invite questions, and to offer reassurance as needed. If you have concerns about your student or would like support, please refer to the following resources: ·

·       Supporting Your Child’s Well-being

·       Caring for yourself while caring for others: A parent’s guide to self-care

·       By Your Side (parent/caregiver resources to support mental health learning)

·       Maltby Centre

·       One Stop Talk

·       Kids Help Phone (Call 1-800-668-6868 or Text “Connect” to 686868)

·       2-1-1 Ontario

If you are worried about your student’s immediate safety, or the safety of others, please seek urgent assistance by calling 9-1-1, your local mobile crisis service (613-354-7388), or by going to the nearest emergency department.

Our Daily Schedule

At Calvin Park PS, we have three 100 minute blocks of instructional time, in addition to two nutrition breaks and recesses. Attendance and promptness are so important for students' learning. We encourage students to give themselves plenty of time to get ready and get out the door in the morning. If a student does miss a class, they should check in with their teacher and try to catch up as soon as possible.
