In the Limestone District School Board, we are committed to equity, inclusion and ensuring everyone feels a strong sense of belonging. To do this important work, we want to learn more about our students – their backgrounds, experiences and needs.

The See Yourself in Limestone Student Census planned for the spring of 2020 had to be postponed due to COVID-19 school closures. Now that we have returned to school, the board has rescheduled this confidential survey for the week of November 23, 2020.

The board has made some changes to the original questions to reflect the effect of COVID-19 in our schools and communities. The board will conduct field tests during October to identify any additional changes needed.

Much of the preparation for the survey took place during the 2019-2020 school year and included meeting with various groups to share information and receive feedback on the census questions and how it would be administered.

School boards across the province are asking students to complete this census to identify and eliminate discrimination and bias from schools and classrooms. All information on individual students will remain confidential.

“Getting to know our students better will allow us to remove barriers and address gaps to help them succeed,” says Superintendent of Education Michele Babcock. “This identity-based data will help us help students reach their full potential while supporting their learning, emotional, mental and physical needs. Ideally, this work will help us to ensure every student sees themselves in Limestone.”

Based on public consultations and family and community feedback, the confidential census will now include all students in Kindergarten to Grade 12.

The census, which will be completed during class time for students in Grades 4 to 12 (for both in-class and virtual learners), will ask students a variety of questions around their identity and demographics. Families of students in Kindergarten to Grade 3 will be asked to complete a survey for each primary student.
