Grade 8 Graduation 2018 Info for Parents - Apr 18
Wednesday April 18, 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians of Calvin Park Grade 8 Students:

This year’s Grade 8 Graduation Ceremony will be held in the LCVI Main Gym on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 beginning at 4:30 p.m. Students need to arrive at school by 4:00 p.m.

We look forward to celebrating our graduates at our 52nd annual Grade 8 Graduation Ceremony. Our plan is to form a graduation committee that honours students’ voices and includes parent and staff input which would help oversee the selection of a theme, decorating and provide additional input into graduation.

Not only is the graduation ceremony important, but equally as important to students is the celebratory events that occur afterward.

We gathered student input on whether this current cohort which will become the class of 2018 preferred to continue the long-standing tradition of a boat cruise, or a dance at the school, or an alternative celebratory activity.  The results of the secret ballot vote held April 17, 2018 are displayed in the pie chart.  Our students have indicated a clear preference to maintain the tradition of having a boat cruise again this year.

Students may choose to have private family celebrations following the graduation ceremony; however, we have booked a cruise and dance on the Island Queen from 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. and we would love as many students as possible to join us.

The boat excursion will be for Calvin Park grade 8 students only. As we have done in the past, we may invite a couple of other schools with small graduating classes to join us on the boat cruise to help provide an opportunity for other Limestone students that would not otherwise be possible.

Parents/Guardians will bring students to the Island Queen dock (at the foot of Brock Street just behind the Confederation Hotel) to begin boarding at 7:45 p.m. The cruise will depart the dock promptly at 8:00 p.m. Pizza, and soft drinks/water will be provided on board at no additional charge. Before any bags are brought on board the ship, they will be inspected by administrators in advance. This excursion will be subject to all regular Limestone District School Board Policies and Procedures in place for a field trip, including the Code of Conduct. Parents/Guardians will pick students up at 10:00 p.m. when the boat returns to the dock.

The graduation ceremony is free; however, there will be a cost of $25.00 per student to help off-set the cost of the boat cruise. Where financial constraints exist, we will assist students so they may attend. Please connect with your child’s teacher, Mrs. Osborne, our Vice Principal, or with me directly to discuss. Permission forms and information regarding the collection of money will be sent out in May 2018.

Tickets will be required to attend the graduation ceremony. A certain number will be given to each student at no charge.  Because of the large number of graduates (approximately 200), we have historically been able to offer approximately 3 tickets per family. More specific information about ticket numbers and how to request additional tickets will be included in our next communication in May. There is no action required at this time.

We look forward to celebrating with you at our 2018 Calvin Park Graduation!
