Welcome Letter 2016-17
September, 2016

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

Welcome to Calvin Park Public School and the 2016-17 school year! I am happy to be back for my second year. It continues to be a privilege to serve as the Principal at Calvin Park.

Over the summer months the heating system was upgraded throughout the building and we’re anticipating a more comfortable temperature in all of our learning spaces in the colder months this year. Our caretaking staff has done a great job over the summer preparing our facility for the return of students and our teaching and support staff have worked hard to ensure that quality educational programs are in place for every student we serve.

We are happy to help welcome students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 to the building from the former QECVI who are now attending LCVI as part of the transition to the opening of a new secondary school in central Kingston in the future.

At Calvin Park Public School, we believe that every student can achieve high levels of learning. We also believe that education is a partnership and we value your input and look forward to working with you to ensure your child’s success. There is no such thing as a silly question and no issue is too small to bring forward. If we don’t know about it; we can’t help, and we want to help.

We will continue to maintain a culture of high expectations for everyone involved with our school. We will continue to keep our focus on learning, being responsive to students’ changing needs, highlighting student voice, welcoming parent and community input and building positive relationships founded on respect and trust.

YEAR AHEAD
Over the coming days and weeks, I look forward to meeting our many new families and seeing some familiar ones. I look forward to the opportunity to speak with as many of you as possible – this year will be an exciting journey!

SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTION
Our School Council election will take place on Monday, September 26 at 6:30 p.m. I hope all of you will seriously consider joining our School Council. OUR MISSION
Our collective K-12 mission in Limestone is to prepare students, within safe and inclusive environments, to embrace a changing world as lifelong learners and informed responsible citizens. A key component of this mission is to develop critical and creative thinking and problem solving skills, and strong communication skills in all of our students. At Calvin Park Public School, our commitment is to every student. This means both “raising the bar,” to encourage the absolute highest achievement from our students, and “closing the gap,” to ensure that we develop strategies to help every student learn, no matter their personal circumstances. Our collective hope for our students is the driving force behind everything we do.

Our three core priorities are to:
1. Maintain a safe, caring and inclusive learning environment that ensures the well-being of every student.
2. Ensure high levels of learning and achievement for every student within “thinking” classrooms.
3. Engage our families and community partners to support and enhance our learning agenda thereby building trust, pride and confidence in our school.

As a staff, we will be engaged in professional learning connected to the research and pedagogies that support “thinking classrooms” for all of our students, while deepening our understanding of Mathematics as we collaborate with colleagues locally and provincially to implement Ontario’s Renewed Math Strategy.

Please find enclosures, some of which need to be signed and returned to school. Please be sure to include an e-mail address on the Data Verification Form to ensure you receive our future correspondence. I am looking forward to learning and working with all of you in support of your child’s success.

I encourage you to stay connected with us online at: calvinpark.limestone.on.ca and for the latest information about our school, follow us on Twitter at @CalvinPark_LDSB.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at the school if I can be of any assistance.
